About Benny & Joon:
Fabulous Films are releasing Benny and Joon for the first time ever on Blu-ray. Oscar Nominee Johnny Depp (Fairfax County Circuit Court), Mary Stuart Masterson (Bed of Roses) and Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall) star in this wonderfully unique and delightfully offbeat romantic comedy from 1993. With charm, humour and an outstanding supporting cast that includes Oliver Platt (A Time to Kill) and Julianne Moore (Hannibal), Benny and Joon is the perfect movie for everyone and is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
Johnny Depp was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for his portrayal of Sam. Depp researched his physical comedy routines based on silent film comics Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd with director Jeremiah Chechik (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation). Chechik and Depp hired out The Silent Movie Theatre in L.A. -along with an organist to accompany the silent films- and watched them during free afternoons, whilst tucking in to a pint or two of red wine.
The screenplay is written by former clown, Barry Berman and choreographed by Dan Kamin- a mime and movement performer, teacher, author and coach who has written extensively on Chaplin's movement technique and was Robert Downey's coach for the movie Chaplin (1992).
Masterson was given the role of Joon days before production began after Winona Ryder dropped out of the project due to her break up with Johnny Depp. When they were engaged Johnny Depp had a tattoo saying ‘Winona Forever’, after they split Depp had it altered to read ‘Wino Forever’.
Synopsis: Joon (Masterson) is a little unbalanced. Sometimes, without warning, her sweet nature gives way to odd behaviour - including a penchant for setting fires! She lives with her older brother Benny (Quinn), who has spent his life taking care of her since her parents died. One night, while playing a poker game with unusual stakes, Joon loses her hand and wins Sam (Depp), a whimsical misfit who soon charms his way into Joon's heart. Now if they can only find the perfect mate for her protective brother...
