Big Boys
15¦ Blu-ray, DVDIf you hear a premise of a film is a group of kids going camping in the woods, it can go either two ways: they either aren’t going to come out alive, or there will be a fair amount of teenage hijinks.
This directorial debut from Corey Sherman, certainly leans more into the latter, but his coming of age tale, that he also wrote, comes at the material from a refreshingly unusual angle.
So tell me, have you ever seen a grown man naked?...
Getting ready for a weekend camping trip in the San Bernardino Mountains are brothers Jamie (Isaac Krasner) and Will (Taj Cross).
They’re being taken by their cousin Allie (Dora Madison), but when Jamie learns that her new boyfriend Dan (David Johnson III) is also tagging along, he complains, as he can tell they’re just going to be having sex all the time, but agrees to go nonetheless.
His brother Will has one thing on his mind, to hook up with any girls that might be at the camping site too, and he expects his younger, 14-year-old brother to do the same. But Jamie isn’t just on the shy side, but also not entirely convinced that girls are his thang, which is only confirmed by the time he spends in the company of Dan.
Camping? Never again!!!
Sherman’s debut is a sweet and charming take on the usual coming-of-age film we’re used to, that is brought to life by young Krasner’s warm and enchanting performance in his first leading role.
It is brimming with a heady mix of fake bravura and tangible awkwardness that everyone who has ever been fourteen can relate to.
The script is a little on the predictable side, but thankfully the level of sensitivity and vulnerability that Krasner brings makes up for it, as well as his quirky personality.
It may not be laugh out loud, but its portrayal of a young teen’s exploration of same sex sexuality makes for a heart-warming camping adventure.
