Mille Bobby Brown appears to be in a very cosy relationship, and we’re not talking about being married to Jake Bongiovi.

Since her break-out role as Eleven in 2016 in Stranger Things, Netflix have had her on board for numerous projects, like an exclusive contracted star of a studio in old Hollywood.

She has starred in their 2024 Damsel, 2025’s The Electric State, and this third entry closes out her Enola Holmes trilogy, which finds her getting married abroad.

Working on the streets of New York City as a cab driver is Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro).

He struggles to sleep, which may have something to do with being an ex-marine and Vietnam vet, so he spends most of his time working through the night, sometimes for 12 hours straight.

He keeps very much to himself, but he is mesmerised by a young woman who is working the presidential campaign of a senator, so much so that he builds the courage to approach her at her place of work.

It goes well for him too, but doesn’t last, and its swift ending is the catalyst for his own personal dark journey.

Experiencing a bout of cold feet on her wedding day is Enola Holmes (Brown). She is on the island of Malta on the cusp of marrying Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge). She is already running late, but finally makes the decision to attend her own wedding.

She gets on a coach and makes haste to the church, but she comes across a stranger following her. When she confronts him she discovers it’s Dr. Watson (Himesh Patel), with some bad news: Sherlock (Henry Cavill) has been kidnapped.

This puts the spanner in the works to her marriage, as she uses her savvy detectiving skills to get to the bottom of who the culprit is.

Having written all three films, Jack Thorne re-unites with his Adolescence director Philip Barantini for this project. It’s his first attempt at a Hollywood-style blockbuster, after directing a few gritty British dramas such as 2021’s Boiling Point.

Thorne has excelled with is TV writing skills, having written all three This is England spin-off mini-series with Shane Meadows, 2019’s The Virtues and of course the hugely successful Adolescence.

He does appear to have run out of Victorian steam as far as this Sherlock Holmes spin-off is concerned. On this evidence, action flicks don’t appear to be in his wheel house, with a convoluted tale being the background to a simple kidnapping plot.

It has all the elements of great action film, including an interesting protagonist in the way of Enola, but all the elements – such as the dialogue, action set pieces, and story as a whole – are all, sadly, run of the mill.

Barantini tries his best on his front, but again, the action film genre isn’t in his wheel house either, and it shows, with a very average vision as far as the direction is concerned.

After a strong sequel with Enola Holmes 2, this third effort just feels as if it’s officially run out of ideas, very much covering old ground as it does – albeit in a new foreign locale.

It would be a good place to end the franchise with a trilogy, but that kind of depends on where Brown’s career goes from here.

Her immediate future sees her in the forthcoming rom-com just Picture It, courtesy of - yes you guessed it, Netflix.

With them acting as a security blanket to the British actress, we probably won’t see what she’s truly capable of until she flies the Netflix roost. And although the Stranger Things finale appeared fairly definitive, you can’t wholly rule out a return to its sci-fi upside down world.

The fact that her current deal with Netflix gives her an impressive amount of business and creative control, staying with them right now is, well, elementary.
