The Inbetweeners 2
15With their clunge-seeking holiday to Crete positively shooting its load all over the British box office in 2011 (setting the record for the biggest weekend opening for a comedy film ever), it was the safest of bets that loveable outsiders Will, Simon, Jay and Neil would be back.
This time, the filthy foursome go sniffing down under for a bit of action.
If Jay's (James Buckley) emails are to believed, he's become quite the legend in Australia on his gap year: he's working in a club in Sydney mixing the decks as DJ Big Penis and getting so much pus-say for the privilege.
It's no surprise then that Will (Simon Bird), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison) are all a bit well jel at this news. With things not going particularly well for any of them at home, they decide to surprise Jay and join him living the life in Oz.
But when they turn up out of the blue, it transpires that Jay is far from being Sydney's premiere DJ: he's actually working in the bogs as a loo attendant.
Will has a chance encounter with Katie (Emily Berrington), an old friend from back home, and she invites him to join her and her group of fellow backpackers to take a trip to Byron Bay. With none of them having any real reason to hang around Sydney any more, the four of them decide to tag along.
Once there Will finds, to his delight, that Katie is sending him signals that she likes him. Meanwhile, Si gets into a pickle on Skype with his girlfriend back home, Neil's bowels struggle to cope with the 'foreign' fast food and Jay finally reveals his real reasons for his trip to Australia.
What does it say about certain sections of the British public, and their affinity to this type of lewd and crude humour, when a film like this can perform so incredibly well at the British box office? Well, it says that sophisticated comedy is all well and good, but at the end of the day, if it's done well, we love nothing more than knob and poo gags. And The Inbetweeners 2 is a veritable knob and poo gag mecca.
Writers Damon Beesley and Iain Morris – who also got behind the camera for this outing – have moved a step on from the Ibiza style lads holiday that was the set up for the first film, and taken a slightly more global backpackers approach with this sequel. Essentially it is nothing more than The Inbetweeners Down Under, but there's really nothing wrong with that. Besides, as they know more than anyone else, their target audience aren't that difficult to please: as long as you include the required amount of knob and poo gags, then you're literally pissing yourself all the way to the bank.
At the same time however, the pair include a certain amount of observational stuff that will no doubt be appreciated by anyone who has been stuck on a hot and sweaty bus in the middle of nowhere, amongst a strong throng of backpacking knobs. This one is definitely for you.
All four lead actors know their characters so well, it must be like slipping on an incredibly comfortable - albeit sweaty and smelly - glove that's been poking around in places it really shouldn't have been, then waving it around with childish delight for all the world to see.
It's not smart and it's definitely not clever, but it's not supposed to be. What it is however, is a stupidly funny road trip featuring everyone's favourite awkward adolescents.
Admittedly the laughs dry up a tad towards the end, but it doesn't matter, as the numerous sick and twisted set pieces more than make up for it.
With both cast and crew stating there will be no number three, this is about as gloriously satisfying a number two you could possibly want.
