Jurassic World: Rebirth

It was in 1993 when the gates to the Jurassic Park were originally opened, created by John Hammond, played by Richard Attenborough.

Since then it has spawned six further entries in the franchise, with this being the latest. Its story takes place five years after Jurassic World Dominion, but stands alone, featuring none of those characters, and sees a crew return to the land of the dinos.

Oh my, I didn't know a dinosaur could get so...aroused?!

Working for a pharmaceutical company is Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend). He approaches Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), a former covert operative, to help him on his mission. His company has discovered that the life of humans can be extended by 20 years, lost with a new cardiovascular disease, thanks to the biomaterial found in dinosaurs.

The problem is, it can only be found in living dinosaurs, and the three needed can only be found in the equator. She agrees, thanks to an impressive fee, but also manages to rope in palaeontologist Henry Lommis (Jonathan Bailey).

They set there on a boat supplied by its captain Duncan (Mahershala Ali), where they hope to get close enough to the dinosaurs concerned, whey they can get their samples.

Meanwhile, sailing in the sea are a family, with dad Reuben (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) in charge, but they get attacked by aqua dinosaurs.

Duncan and the team find them, but it’s only the start of a more confrontational experience with these Jurassic beasts in this part of the world.

Ooh rubber dinghy rapids?!

Although Welsh director Gareth Edwards’ film is tentatively connected to Jurassic World Dominion, it is a standalone dinosaur flick that can be watched without having seen any of the other films in the franchise. And considering his monster DNA, having directed 2010’s Monsters and 2014’s Godzilla, this was in very safe hands. But possibly too safe.

Its narrative struggles, with the story of getting samples just not enough for the film’s entirety. So that of another family’s plight being thrown in, is to beef it up overall. But they just don’t work.

Within the first hour, it comes across more of Jurassic Jaws, as it basically recreates the Jaws scenario but with dinosaurs.

The second half is perfunctory, with the bare bones of a story just being there to provide relevant action scenes. It doesn’t forward the franchise in any way, and does nothing more than tread water in a disappointing fashion.

All in all it’s all cobbled together, and lacking any cohesion.

Certainly having the likes of Johansson and Ali is a complete waste of their considerable talent, and feels nothing more than a cash job for the pair of them.

What’s worse, some of the dinosaur action scenes are rather limp, with one monster looking like it would just about feature in a Universal theme park, looking embarrassingly unrealistic as it does.

It may consider itself a ‘Rebirth’, but the result is more of a still birth, and doesn’t deserve the “Jurassic” name, or entry into the franchise, with a woefully generic approach.

With it lacking any impact, it would be no surprise with all those concerned facing the same thing – extinction.
