Keeper

Wilson, Seaman, Jennings, Lehmann, Raya – these names are number one as far as keepers are concerned for some.

This film however, is not about them, or that type of keeper.

It is in fact the follow-up to US director Osgood Perkins’ 2024 Longlegs and last year’s The Monkey.

This is the only place I get signal and i'm on 5%!!!!

Going for a break at a remote cabin in the woods is Liz (Tatiana Maslany); it’s the first time she’s been, and she’s going with her boyfriend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), whose family own it.

It’s very quiet, only rudely interrupted by his cousin Darren (Birkett Turton), who’s staying in the opposite cabin with his glamorous girlfriend Minka (Eden Weiss), who gatecrashes a dinner uninvited.

It’s supposed to be a time for relaxation and spending time together to celebrate their first anniversary, but Liz ends up having a terrifying time.

So keep the film's secret- it isn't very good.

There’s no doubting that Perkins’ latest effort is a creepy, unnerving experience. It’s stylishly shot, as is the director’s way, but the film’s plot may not be palatable for some.

It can be best described as a folk horror, which is just a way of describing it as a horror with retro sensibilities, paying homage to classic horrors of a time, with 1973’s the Wicker Man being the seminal example.

It’s atmospheric, but the plot is just a little bit too woolly, with unconventional characters rattling around a conventional horror locale – the creepy cabin – within an unconventional story.

Perkins does enough to hold your attention throughout, but when the plot comes together with the reveal, it’s undeniably unsatisfactory.

Perhaps it’s due to the fact that the director didn’t write this screenplay, which he did with his last two features that were successful – both critically and commercially.

It’s only a petite cast of four, and none of them, especially the main couple played by Maslany and Sutherland, are likeable, which is difficult for Maslany’s character predominantly, being the main protagonist in peril.

As intriguing as it manages to be – visually at least, the wishy-washy flimsy-folksy nature of the plot doesn’t make it an attractive concern, and certainly not worth getting your hands on.
