Star wars Battlefront
Xbox One, PS4, PC ¦ shooterThere have been a myriad of games based on the Star Wars universe, some better than others. For us, it's difficult to beat the 1983 Atari arcade game; sitting inside the cabinet, clinging onto the controls is the closest you could possibly get to flying an X-Wing fighter. And then there are its vector (or Vec-tor if you're American) graphics that still hold up today.
As far as home consoles are concerned, if the game isn't made of LEGO bricks, chances are you're getting a fairly average Star Wars experience.
What Dice have produced is something that looks like a Star Wars game, but is essentially a Battlefield multiplayer game in disguise.
You can join the Alliance and play as a rebel, or you can pop over to the dark side and be a Stormtrooper. Then, on a fairly large map, you shoot at each other until one side wins. And that's about it. There are of course variations on a theme, with a number of different modes for you to feel the force of (from 40-player battles in Walker Assault, to the more intimate 6 v 6 Droid Run).
You can also play as either Luke or his old man, which means you not only get to wield a Lightsaber, but you get to use the force too. Han, Leia, and Boba Fett are also playable characters, but if you want to play as Yoda, you're plain out of luck. The good news is that the game focuses on the original trilogy, and it's like episodes 1 - 3 never existed, which is the way it should be.
But it's not all about schlepping around the Star Wars universe on foot, as you can also take a pew in classic vehicles including Snow Speeders, X-Wing fighters and Speeder Bikes.
The whole experience is geared towards an online multiplayer extravaganza, which is all well and good, but if you're looking for a solo campaign, this isn't the game you're looking for. Believe or not, some gamers still enjoy some solo action before dipping their toes into multiplayer mayhem.
Overall there's no mistaking that you are taking part in the world of Star Wars; everything from the iconic music, to authentic settings, characters and vehicles help to evoke a sensation that the force is strong with this one. And yet you can dress a cow up to look like a Bantha, but does it make it a Star Wars game?
If you like all things Star Wars, and you're also a fan of multiplayer maps (the type you'll find with the likes of Battlefield and COD) then you can't go wrong with this game.
If you're looking for a deeper, more immersive, more-rounded Star Wars experience however, then this isn't the game you're looking for.
