About The Wombles:
For the first time ever, every classic episode of The Wombles is now available fully restored and presented from hi-definition masters. This set contains all 60 episodes, a total of nearly 5 hours of outstanding Wombles action for you to enjoy over and over again.
Based on the books written by Elisabeth Beresford and brought to life by the beloved Bernard Cribbins, these eco-conscious lovable creatures first appeared on British TV in the mid 70’s and have since become cherished icons of British pop culture.
The idea for The Wombles came about when Beresford went for a Christmas walk on Wimbledon Common with her daughter Kate, who exclaimed “Ma, isn’t it great on Wombledon Common?”. The characters are based around Beresford’s family and named after places the family had links with. Great Uncle Bulgaria was based on Beresford’s father in law who used to wear “a three piece suit, gumboots and a trilby”. Madame Cholet was based on Beresford’s mother a great cook and named after the city of Cholet in France where her daughter Kate went on a French exchange. Tobermory was her brother- a skilled inventor. And Bungo and Orinoco were her son and daughter.
Ivor Wood (Paddington, Postman Pat, Charlie Chalk) directed and animated the series. The original books described wombles as "a bit like teddy bears to look at but they have real claws and live beneath Wimbledon Common". When the animated series was being developed Wood had to redesign the characters to make them less like teddy bears as it was thought there were too many other bear characters around at the time.
The Wombles is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
